The government’s Rp 20 trillion investment plan prioritizes the development of an integrated poultry ecosystem to support the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program, while also reducing price disparities that often trigger inflation in regions outside production centers. This major transformation in the national poultry subsector was the central theme of the Poultry Livestock Workshop held some time ago at the Drh. R. Soepardjo Auditorium, Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (Fapet UGM).
The Dean of Fapet UGM, Prof. Budi Guntoro, stated that the investment plan has generated a wide range of responses, encompassing both optimism and concern. The planned Rp 20 trillion investment by the Fund Investment Management Agency (Danantara) to support the MBG program, he noted, has sparked extensive discussion among stakeholders. “This program plan has generated diverse perspectives and arguments among experts, professionals, the public, and especially farmers, both within associations and as independent actors,” he said.
He acknowledged that although the policy carries positive intentions, it has not yet fully reassured all parties. Concerns are primarily raised by livestock farmers regarding the sustainability of their businesses once the policy is implemented. Another issue highlighted is the accuracy of targeted funding allocation.
Meanwhile, Prof. Ali Agus, Deputy Chairman for Agriculture at the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII) and Expert Advisor to the Minister of Agriculture for Downstream Processing, described the initiative as a “major undertaking” that should be fully utilized. “Political support for livestock development is not always available, so this momentum must not be missed. The political opportunity is here—do not let it pass,” he emphasized.
Agung Suganda, Director General of Animal Husbandry and Animal Health (Dirjen PKH), explained that the plan to develop integrated downstream poultry processing was formulated following the President’s directive to the Minister of Agriculture to ensure future availability of chicken meat and eggs, reduce price disparities, and control inflation. The plan was officially announced by the Minister of Agriculture and the Minister of Investment on November 7, 2025.
“Nationally, Indonesia is currently self-sufficient in chicken meat and eggs. In 2024, national chicken meat production recorded a surplus of 0.31 million tons, while egg production showed a surplus of 0.17 million tons. However, it is important to note that this surplus is declining as the target population for the nutrition program continues to expand. The total projected annual demand for the MBG program—targeting 82.9 million beneficiaries and supported by 30,089 kitchen units—is estimated at 700,000 tons of eggs and 1.1 million tons of chicken meat,” Agung stated.
He further explained that, assuming chicken meat and eggs are consumed three times per week, projections for 2025 indicate a significant potential deficit if production is not increased. The projected egg deficit could reach 482,000 tons, while the chicken meat deficit may reach 700,000 tons. Consequently, the integrated poultry development initiative is designed to increase production by 1 million tons of eggs and 1.5 million tons of chicken meat to meet MBG requirements and anticipate rising national per capita consumption.
